TIP OF THE WEEK #02 - LICENSING COVER TUNES FOR YOUR ALBUM

THIS WEEKS TIP DEALS WITH COVER TUNES

The John-Paul Jones Group is about to release a series of tribute EP's  over 2018.   May 1st is our first release will be of songs by an inspirational artist, yet to be revealed.   However one of the most important thing that all artists should learn is that paying for the use of songs is important.

This is an easy process and is done through the HARRY FOX AGENCY.   You see all of you who play in cover bands, feel like they are "entitled" to use the songs in your music career.  And although no one is chasing you down at your gig at the Crusty's Crab Shack...  if you record those songs, for any purpose,   you might want to check into LICENSING those songs.  Which then allows you to utilize the songs for commercial purposes.

Here at the John-Paul Jones Group, we have a publishing company, a record label, a recording studio, and of course the live band entities.  It is important to protect these income generating organizations. Obeying the copyright laws is the first step.

Through a process on the Harry Fox Agency's Songfile page, you can do this easily and quickly.
I was able to purchase a license to distribute 100 copies of the 3 songs we have recorded and are currently mixing.

For these three songs, I had to pay two different fees.

$27.30 Royalty Fee
48.00 Processing Fee.
75.30 Total Fee.

Which when you do the cost its about .75 per album so approximately .251 per song per album.  Not a very big price to pay.  And I know that the songwriter is getting this fee.  Now the Harry Fox Agency fee is kind of steep, but remember they handle the entire licensing process.  Its basically like avoiding hiring a lawyer to take care of this for you.

The cost of this is simply going into the COST OF GOODS SOLD section on the CD Budget.

So moral of the story, paying royalties for using cover tunes on a record is not a hard thing to do  You can find the process right here.  The Harry Fox Agency can cover streams as well.

You can learn everything on their site.   I am looking forward to sharing more with you in the next Tip of the Week.

Until Next Time
Jp Jones
